2022 Lawn and Landscape Business Owner Expectations

I wanted to quickly share my insight on what lawn and landscape business owners can expect in 2022 as the world continues to deal with COVID-19.

As a former lawn and landscape business owner turned lawn and landscape industry marketer and parts supplier, here's what I believe the average small lawn and landscape business owner can expect in 2022.

Topics we'll cover:

  • Equipment/Parts & Supplies - Pricing & Availability
  • Marketing
  • Employees
  • Customers

I'm writing this article on January 6th, 2022 amid the huge spike in COVID-19 cases as expected after the holiday season.

Buy New Equipment and Replacement Parts As Soon As You Can

Seriously, COVID-19 is really screwing the supply chain up.  We are authorized dealers for 2 of the largest lawn and landscape parts suppliers in the entire world.  Let me tell you...lots of items have been out of stock for months, many items just went out of stock, and the problem will only get worse - I promise you and wish it wasn't so.

Another reason to buy now is our suppliers are raising prices almost across the board on a regular basis, many of them raises prices more than once per month!  If you think parts are expensive now, wait a couple months...

You Must Get In Front Of New Potential Customers

Fewer people will be looking for a new lawn and landscape service provider in 2022.  Why?  Because so many people are now working from home or living on a reduced income.  This means they have more time to do it themselves and less money to spend on lawn and landscape services.

Should you freak out if you are trying to grow your lawn care business in 2022?  Absolutely not!  But, you should make sure your company at the top of the Google search results.

How can you get on the 1st page of Google towards the top?

I have 3 ways, possibly 4 ways to get your business at the top of Google for relevant searches for the services you offer in your local area.

  1. Maximize the benefits of your free Google My Business (now Google Business Profile).  This puts you in the "Map Pack" right below Google Search Ads.
  2. Run Google Search Ads.  This puts you at the top of Google.
  3. Add quality, original, and authorative content to your website to ranks organically.  This puts you right under the Map Pack.
  4. Sign up for Google Local Services Ads.  This will put you at the very top of Google if it is available in your geographic market.

Employees Issues Will Continue

This should come as no surprise.  Finding and keeping quality employees has always been the hardest part of running a lawn and landscape business.  With our government handing out money, the employee issue will be worse than its ever been.

You can feel a little better about this knowing it's not just an issue in the lawn and landscape industry.  Businesses big and small in all industries are suffering from the government handing out money.

2022 Lawn & Landscape Industry

The Lawn Care Customer Avatar Is Changing

As mentioned earlier, more people are working from home or being compensated less than they have in the past.  A lot of people are living off free money from the government.  This is going to create a small decline in people seeking a new lawn service in 2022 in my opinion.

For high end customers, there probably won't be much of a change in their buying habits.  The big change will be with the middle-class lawn care customer.  Many people in the middle-class that would normally hire a lawn service will do the work themselves in 2022.

That is why you need to be at the top of Google's search results when people are searching for service!

Conclusion

I hope you got a little something out of this.

The bottom line is if your business is performing quality work and able to offer your services at a fair price to the customer which is still profitable to you, you are going to be fine!
