Kills Weeds and Grow Grass (At The Same Time!)

If you have a lawn that is riddled with weeds and has plenty of thin and bare spots, we have some really good news for you!

There is a way to kill weeds and grow grass at the same time!

Let's talk about how to kill existing weeds in your lawn at the same time as you overseed thin and bare spots with grass seed.

Restoring a Lawn Full of Weeds in 3 Steps

  1. Spray existing weeds in your lawn with the right selective herbicide
  2. Core aerate your lawn
  3. Spread grass seed

Restoring a lawn full of weeds is really as simple as stated in these 3 steps.

DIY Lawn Care Products Equipment

Step 1: Killing existing weeds is a very important step as weeds suck valuable water and nutrients from the soil which the grass seed will need to germinate.

Step 2: Aerating your lawn with a core aerator creates thousands of holes which creates a perfect environment for good 'seed to soil' contact which is very important in grass seed germination.

Step 3: If you want to grow grass, you will need to spread some grass seed!

Bonus - Important things to consider: The 3 steps noted above will get you results.  If you would like to increase the effectiveness of your lawn renovation, we have a couple additional tips.

Consider a repeat application of weed control safe for grass seed 10-21 after your 1st application to gain control of hard-to-control weeds.  Consider applying a start fertilizer in addition to spreading grass seed after core aerating your lawn.  Water your lawn daily until the new grass has matured enough to be mowed at the same height as the rest of your lawn.

Tenacity Herbicide

Why you need to use Tenacity herbicide when treating weeds and sowing grass seed

Tenacity is hands down my favorite weed control product but there are some things you need to be aware of before using it.  We'll cover grass species Tenacity is safe to be used on and weeds controlled plus cover mixing ratios and how to apply it.

My only qualm with Tenacity is that is turns the weeds white as it works.  The weeds in your lawn will literally turn as white as a sheet of paper.  It's only temporary, but can be a shock if your lawn is full of weeds and you aren't expecting this!
