We recently received an email from a local college student asking us about lawn mower safety, specifically push mower safety.
We thought we'd share the college students questions and our answers.
Push Mower Safety Inquiry From Local College Student
I am Matthew F., a junior at Ignite Institute in the Engineering College. I am doing a yearlong project on lawn mowers and safety. I have a few questions regarding lawn mowers. If you would be so kind to answer, I would appreciate it, thanks.
- What part(s) on push lawn mowers break the most frequently?
- Have any clients and/or client's pets been hurt in a push mower accident?
- If so, how many?
- Do you think that push mowers could be made safer to prevent accidents?
- If so, how?
iGoPro Lawn Supply's Push Mower Safety Tips
Very cool. I am local and ran a lawn care business for 10 years before starting my online store. I definitely consider myself an expert when it comes to lawn mowers and am happy to help.
What part(s) on push lawn mowers break the most frequently?
Push lawn mower parts that fail most often:
Blades - applicable to all types of mowers - blades will become dull and/or get damaged while mowing. Often sharpening makes the blade usable again but if bent or a gash is taken out while mowing, it should be replaced.
Specifically for push mowers, riders and commercial zero turns and walk behinds have other problem parts, cables (throttle cables, stop cables, control cables - various types of cables found on push mowers...) seem to be the #1 replacement part. Next would have to be replacement wheel assemblies - often these are made of plastic on push mowers.
Have any clients and/or client's pets been hurt in a push mower accident?
I'm not sure of how many people/pets are injured by push mowers. I personally don't have any experience with this but I am sure it has happened and will happen again.
Do you think that push mowers could be made safer to prevent accidents?
As far as preventing future accidents, I think the answer would be education. Push mowers are pretty simple, straightforward machines. If there was greater awareness of the dangers of a running lawn mower, maybe people would exercise more caution while operating a push mower or when near a push mower in use.
All the best,
